The incident occurred at about 5:40 p.m. on Saturday Dec 29th. The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Haruna Mohammed, confirmed the incident.

He said: “Police patrol team, led by the Divisional Police Officer in-charge of Nimo Police Division, CSP Benjamin Egu on arrival at the scene, contacted fire Service department, which later put out the fire with the help of local volunteers. However, the fire caused extensive damage in the building as almost all the corpses at the mortuary were burnt beyond recognition. The cause of the fire incident is still unknown but the case is under investigation to ascertain circumstances surrounding the incident”.

SERAP reports FG and ASUU to the United Nations over the continued closure of Nigerian Universities

SERAP reports?FG and?ASUU to the United Nations?over the continued closure of Nigerian Universities

Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project(SERAP) has sent an urgent appeal to two UN special rapporteurs urging them to “prevail upon the government of President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to reach an agreement to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU.
SERAP said the strike continues to have real and dire consequences on the right to higher education, specifically university education, as guaranteed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to which Nigeria is a state party.”

In the urgent appeal dated 28 December 2018 and signed by SERAP senior legal adviser Bamisope Adeyanju, the organization said: “By failing to prevent and end the ongoing strike action by ASUU, the Nigerian government has defied and breached the explicit requirements of the right to equal access to higher education by Nigerian children and young people, under article 13(2)(c) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.”

The urgent appeal sent to Ms. Koumbou Boly Barry, Special Rapporteur on the right to education and Professor Philip Alston, Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty and human rights argues that: “The failure by the Nigerian government to reach an agreement with ASUU has also implicitly made access to higher education a privilege of the rich and well-to-do rather than a right of every Nigerian child and young person, as students in private schools continue to attend classes while those in public universities stay at home.

According to SERAP, “The failure to end the ongoing strike action by ASUU is also a fundamental breach of the right to higher education without discrimination or exclusion, as strike actions continue to penalise economically disadvantaged parents who have no means or lack the capacity to pay to send their children to private schools.
The urgent appeal read in part: “The obligations of the Nigerian government to create the conditions necessary for the enjoyment of the right to education include to take preventive measures to address the root causes of strike action by ASUU and to take steps to end any strike action in a timely manner when it occurs.”
“It is the responsibility of the government to preserve and strengthen education as a public good and a matter of public interest. Without the urgent intervention of the Special Rapporteurs, the ongoing strike action by ASUU would continue and this would continue to impede access to university education for the poor and marginalized.”
“SERAP is concerned that Nigerian students in public universities have suffered many years of academic disruption as a result of the failure of successive Nigerian governments to address the root causes of strike action by ASUU and to timely reach agreement to end strike action and its devastating consequences on the right to equal and quality higher education.”
“Persistent strike actions in the education sector have continued to cause disruption of classes and undermine both the quality and duration of students’ education.”
“We note that the right to strike is one of the fundamental means available to workers to promote their interests. However, we are seriously concerned that the failure by both the Nigerian government and ASUU to make substantial progress in negotiations and reach amicable settlement to end the unduly prolonged strike action has undermined the right of Nigerian children and young people to higher education.”
“The ongoing strike action by ASUU in Nigeria if not urgently addressed would continue to have grave consequences for the youth of our country as well as the country’s development and progress as a whole.”
“Universal access is an essential prerequisite for the exercise of the right to education. But the failure by the Nigerian government to end the strike action by ASUU has contributed to denying students from disadvantaged backgrounds equal access to university education, as these students are unable or lack the capacity to pay to access private schools.”
“This situation has aggravated existing disparities in access to university education in the country, further marginalizing economically disadvantaged parents and students.”
“SERAP believes that providing Nigerian children and young people equal access to higher education should be the core public service functions of the Nigerian government. Providing public schools ranks at the very apex of the function of a State.”
“SERAP believes that equal access of Nigerian children and young people to quality and uninterrupted education including at the university level would contribute to producing citizens who are fundamentally equal and people who actively participate in society. It would enable people to enjoy the rights as well as fulfil obligations that are associated with citizenship.”
“According to our information, members of ASUU suspended their academic responsibilities in the first week of November 2018, and weeks of negotiations with the Nigerian government since then have yielded no amicable settlement or agreement. ASUU is alleging failure by the Nigerian authorities to implement 2009 agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding.”
“SERAP notes that article 13(2)(c) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights explicitly guarantees the right to higher education, which includes university education. According to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, states parties are required to make higher education including university education available on equal basis, and to ensure the progressive introduction of free education at all levels of education.”
“States parties including Nigeria have obligations to ensure that the liberty of providing education set out in article 13(4) of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights does not lead to extreme disparities of educational opportunity for some groups in society.”
“The rights and values enshrined in the Constitution of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) all point to the right to the provision of equal access to quality education including at the university level. These rights include human rights, such as the right to equality and the right to human dignity as well as numerous other civil and political rights, such as access to information, which cannot be properly understood or exercised if one is inadequately trained and uneducated.”

Wizkid is Africa’s best artiste but…

For kicking off his December 19 music concert tagged ‘Wizkid VIP Experience Concert’ hours after the scheduled time, the Executive Secretary, Lagos State Employmen sust Fund, Akin Oyebode, has described pop star, Wizkid, as an undisciplined artiste.
Wizkid
According to Oyebode who made the statement in a series of tweets while recounting his rather annoying experience after the much anticipated concert, though the Ojuelegba hit maker probably has everything possible to be rated Africa’s best musician, he lacks a very significant human attributes discipline.
“Wizkid probably has everything to be the best performer on the continent, except discipline. Talent is effortlessly obvious, but the extra 5% perspiration gives you is still missing. But Wiz brings amazing energy and has incredible stage presence; plus there’s something about the boy that makes people lose their home training at his concerts”, he said.
Speaking further, he advised entertainers to quit the habit of commencing their shows way behind schedule.
“This thing where a 7pm concert starts the following day needs to die. Basket Mouth told all the jokes he knew; he and Dotun probably spent more time on stage than the headliner.”
However, he added that henceforth, he may attend only Adekunle Gold and Teni’s music shows because they are probably the only singers who keep to time and also make use of live bands unlike other A’list artistes who use DJs.
“Henceforth, Adekunle Gold and Teni, only. Also, there’s no need to have a band if you’re going to use DJ Tunez all night. It’s just a reminder that you probably didn’t make rehearsals. Unless it’s Adekunle Gold, it’s best to show up 4-hours after the advertised time”, he concluded

Nigerian Singer, Runtown Reportedly Banned From Entering US

Runtown's estranged music record label boss, Johnson Adumike has sabotaged his US visa, hence a ban placed on him.
Runtown
Fresh reports have indicated that Nigerian singer, Douglas Jack Agu has been banned from entering the United States.
According to Johnson Adumike, the General Manager of his erstwhile record label, Eric Many Entertainment, Runtown and his brother's secured the US visa though the label but his brother's refused to come back, thus staying in the United States illegally on expired visa.
In his words, 'the P-3 visa (which allows an artist or entertainer, individually or as a group, to enter the U.S) that Eric Many got for Runtown and his brothers to enter the United States has expired and Runtown's brothers did not come back causing their visas to expire.
Eric Many reported this incident to United States immigration, so when Runtown and his mother went to reapply for their visas, they found out that they have been banned from traveling to the US simply because America believes that both him and his mother may decide not to come back again just as his brothers'.
Johnson also added that 'karma always comes back for you when you bite the hand that feeds you'.
This is happening few months after Runtown and his brother were called out by a Caucasian woman of alleged fraud.

Why Manchester United sacked Mourinho

Mourinho
Manchester United have sacked manager Jose Mourinho after their worst start to a season in almost 30 years, the club announced on Tuesday.

The 55-year-old Portuguese’s last match in charge was the 3-1 defeat by Premier League league leaders Liverpool on Sunday which left them 19 points behind their opponents.

Mourinho’s sacking comes just two-and-a-half years into his tenure and three years and a day since Chelsea sacked him just months after he had guided them to the title.

Former player Michael Carrick, now a member of the coaching staff, is expected to take charge in an interim role but United said a caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the season.

The club’s worst start in the league since 1990 means even Mourinho’s ambition of reaching the top four and a Champions League qualification spot is in danger.

Despite United reaching the Champions League knockout stages — they face an intimidating last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain — a mix of the results, dressing-room discord and criticism of the board’s transfer policy proved potent factors in the decision to dismiss him.

A United source told AFP that Mourinho had been supported in his efforts to sign players and described reports of player power at the club as being key to the sacking as being wide of the mark.

According to British media reports, United will have to pay £22.5 million ($28 million) — as the club are still in the Champions League — to sever the ties.

“Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect,” a club statement said. “The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.

“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.

” Carrick is favoured for the caretaker role having become part of the coaching staff this season.

– ‘Deteriorating relationship’ –

In the longer term former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane has been linked to the club and Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino could also be a name in the frame.

Mourinho’s reign had started well enough with the League Cup and the Europa League trophies but neighbours Manchester City’s dominance over them in the league has hurt.

The wound went even deeper for Mourinho as City are managed by Pep Guardiola, who got the better of him when he managed Barcelona and Mourinho was at Real Madrid.

However, despite his protestations to the contrary the United board gave Mourinho plenty of money to compete.

Top-quality players such as Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku — who he persuaded to come to United and not Chelsea for £75 million in 2017 — and Paul Pogba for a then world record fee of £89 million in 2016 have floundered under his authoritarian stewardship.

Indeed it was his deteriorating relationship with World Cup-winning midfielder Pogba — one of many to feel the lash of his tongue in public — that symbolised the decline at the club under him.

Mourinho questioned his attitude while the player hit back with open criticism of the tactics, culminating in him kicking his heels on the bench during the Liverpool debacle on Sunday.

Ogbanna
The Enugu Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on December 17, 2018 arraigned Ogbonna Victor Chibuzor, a serving member of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC before Justice A.M. Liman of the Federal High Court, Enugu on a five-count charge bordering on intent to defraud, and possession of fraudulent documents contrary to Section 6 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act 2006 and punishable under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.
Ogbanna’s arrest was sequel to series of raids carried out by operatives over the past one week in which several suspected fraudsters in their early 20s, alleged to be engaging in online fraud, were arrested having been found to be living a flamboyant lifestyle not commensurate to the means of livelihood.
Analysis carried out on the computer of the suspected fraudster revealed certain incriminating documents intended to be used in swindling gullible Nigerians and foreigners alike.
Further investigations disclosed that Ogbanna uses his e-mail address [email protected] to send unsolicited emails to his victims using fake or stolen identity to legitimize his nefarious activities.
One of the documents was addressed to one Alan Christopher of BG Group Plc, Thames Valley Park, Reading, RG6, Berkshire, United Kingdom, with a rider “Your attention is needed” and a second paragraph talking about a £12,500,000 (Twelve Million Five Hundred Thousand Pounds Sterling) unclaimed contract fund.
Another document found with the accused was a purported “Contract Award Certificate” to one Michael Morgan of 101 Brooklyn, New York, United State of America, on “Directing and Fixing of Oil Spillage” in the Niger Delta signed by the Chairman, Contract Tender Board and Chairman, Legal Department of Chevron Nigeria.
He pleaded “not guilty” to the charges preferred against him occasioning his counsel E.O. Isiwu to move a motion for bail, which was opposed by prosecuting counsel, Innocent Mbachie.
The presiding judge, however, granted bail to the defendant in the sum of N500, 000 (Five Hundred Thousand Naira) and one surety in like sum. The surety, he ruled, “must have a landed property in Enugu which must be verified by the Commissioner of Lands”. Ogbonna is to be remanded in prison custody until he fulfils his bail conditions.
The case has been adjourned to January 30, 2019.

According to him, we are commencing our strike tomorrow as scheduled. Everything is set and there is no going back.

“There is an invitation for a meeting on Dec. 17, but we will still commence our strike on Wednesday.

“I don’t know what will happen at the meeting or what they have decided, but until we meet with them, we cannot predict.

”I don’t know what they plan to present until we meet with them,“ he said.

Duste said that the strike would be comprehensive and total, until all issues raised were adequately addressed by the government.

He said the union had issued a notice directing all members nationwide to comply and down tools by midnight of Dec.12.

The president said the union leaders would also send a reminder to all its branches, adding that there would be no academic activities in all the polytechnics until further notice.

Dutse said that the failure of the Federal Government and the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, to comply with the agreements reached with the union necessitated the strike.

He said the union had in 2009 signed an agreement with the government and also a Memorandum of Action in 2017, adding that none of the agreements had been implemented.

Speaking on the resolution reached at the union’s 93rd National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Yaba College of Technology, Lagos State on Nov. 29, Dutse said the strike was inevitable. He said the union had issued a notice directing all members nationwide to comply and down tools by midnight of Tuesday, Dec.12. He said that the union would also send a reminder to its branches on Wednesday.

The former Commissioner of information and Special Adviser to Governor Ben Ayade on Biodiversity, Mr. Edet Okon Asim, is currently cooling his heels in police custody for continuously defiling an underaged girl for about three years in Calabar.

TGB learned that the girl who was about 12 when the defilement started was “forced” into aborting twice for Mr. Asim with consent of her mother and this has led to a puncture of her uterus while carrying out a third abortion .

Findings by TGB show that the girl’s mother one Mrs. Stella is also a mistress to the former Commissioner of Information ,Mr. Asim and had approved the unholy relationship between her daughter and her lover (Mr. Asim).

A source who pleaded anonymity said that Mrs. Stella was married to a popular Calabar based pastor who was a good friend of Asim and bore two children for the deceased man of God.

“Since the death of the pastor, Mr. Asim has been “helping” the family and is their benefactor for years now. Immediately the girl started maturing, he took interest and started sleeping with both of them (daughter and mother)
TGB  also learned that the victim, who is a student of the Federal Government Girls College, Calabar was reportedly cautioned by her mother not to divulge any information while collaborating with the randy ex -mayor.

WHAT BROKE THE CAMELS BACK

Speaking with our writers, Principal Counsel, Basic Rights Council Initiative, BCRI and Child’s Right Activist, James Ibor said the third abortion for the former commissioner of information, Mr. Edet Okon Asim was poorly carried out and by a quack too.

“The former Mayor of Calabar and Special Adviser to Gov Ayade has been sexually abusing the girl for many years even before she became a teenager .But the third abortion on the victim exposed the unholy act.

“From the examination that has been carried out so far, preliminary results have shown that the girl’s uterus has been partially perforated and she may likely not be able to conceive again.

According to him:”Her teacher(the victim’s) discovered and shared the story on a Whats App page where rights activist and the founder of Project Alert, a non-governmental organization NGO, which specializes in handling such cases, Mrs. Josephine Chukwuma, is a subscriber and she called us.

“We had to investigate and informed the police that led to the arrest of Mr. Asim and Ms. Stella and we have received several calls from various powerful people to step down the matter but the crime is against humanity, the girl needs to be protected.

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Irene Ugbo, confirmed the incident adding that it was really unfortunate. “We are on top of the matter and we what to get all the facts of the case so to charge the matter to court,

we are leaving no stone unturned because the law must take its cause. It doesn’t matter the figure or whose ox is gored justice must be served ,the law must prevail,” she said.
